We franchise sanitation units to create a Fresh Life network across Nairobi’s urban slums, offering an affordable
and effective alternative to sewers. Cities are responsible for a portion of the cost because residents invest in their
own solutions. The toilets are high-quality, low-cost sanitation units. With a urine-diverting squat plate, they source-
separate solid and liquid waste, making collection and conversion safe and easy. For the comfort and convenience
of owners and users, amenities include a handwashing station with soap, water and a bin for feminine hygiene
products. We offer support services to network members to ensure that they generate local demand and offer
quality services to users. These include operational support, and a daily waste collection service.
Sanergy has also built other sanitation products and services to serve any urban slum effectively. This includes
Mtaa Fresh, our pit latrine emptying service, which works with current emptiers to provide cleaner and safer
services both for the community and the emptier, as well as guarantees the safe treatment of waste.

FROM THE COMMUNITY EVERY YEAR

The waste is removed from the community by handcarts and trucks. The handcarts ensure we can install toilets
deep in urban slums where there are only narrow, unpaved roads as access points. The waste is then
taken out of the community by a professional logistics team using trucks. As the urban populations throughout
East Africa grow, so does the solid waste management burden – a situation worsened by a lack of regulations’
enforcement. Nairobi produces about 1 million tons of solid waste per year and only 50% is collected. Most of it is illegally
dumped, posing a huge risk to the environment. We offtake organic waste through City Fresh – a green waste

SELLING HIGH QUALITY FARM INPUTS
TO OVER 1,000 KENYAN FARMERS

We convert the waste at a centralized facility into valuable end-products such as
organic fertilizer and insect-based animal feed. To produce the insect-based animal feed, we have a colony of Black
Soldier Flies, whose larvae consume organic waste. The pathogen-free larvae make sustainably
produced, nutrient-rich protein input for animal feed.
To produce the fertilizer, frass residue from Black Soldier Fly production processes is mixed with carbon sources
from plant waste. We use windrow management technology to systematically measure temperature, aeration,
and moisture content to ensure a high-quality compost.

Once ready, we test our end-products by third parties to ensure compliance with international standards.
